This 25 year old home in University City was purchased by the client — a doctor and a bachelor — with an eye to create the ideal living space. With a love for cooking and a classic feel for the kitchen area, there were certain features needed in the kitchen to allow for thee feel and texture this client was looking for when preparing meals.
The Challenge
While the original kitchen was functional, it had a very tight and closed in feeling. It also did not lend itself very well to having more than one person in the kitchen, although it seemed as though that was the intent of the original design, by the placement of a small island.
The Solution
We determined that the island was actually more of an impediment in this kitchen than a functional help. It was also determined that by opening the wall between the kitchen and dining room, a “great” room effect could be achieved whereby family and guests could communicate and enjoy the company of others literally from one end of the home to the other.
The small walk-in pantry in the original kitchen was another feature that was felt had limited usefulness. By eliminating it and adding cabinet pantry units, storage space and accessibility was actually increased, while giving the kitchen a more open feel and providing flexibility for the placement of new appliances.
All in all, our clients are enjoying a beautiful, open kitchen and meal preparation experience that has enhanced their busy lifestyle and provided them with great entertaining and family gathering experiences.
